In addition to the well-known car manufacturers and supporting industries, there are many smaller, family run businesses which are open to doing business with you.
Here we will show five things that will help you break down those barriers and give way to a promising and hopefully lucrative partnership.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]1. Formality, it’s not so regimented as you think.
Yes, there can be more formality than we are used to in the UK or in the US and this is what gives Germans their direct, no-nonsense reputation. When speaking in German you tend to address your clients by their title (Herr, Frau etc) rather than using given names as is more common in the UK. However, when talking in English, addressing your interlocutor by their given name is fine and can be a refreshing change for people used to being more formal, and can help break the ice.
2. Knowledge and understanding are key
Customers expect a sales representative to have a high degree of technical understanding of the product or service they are offering – generally sales reps employed in Germany are degree qualified in a technical subject, particularly when selling complex technical solutions. But don’t worry if you are not, they won’t hold it against you, but be sure you know what you are talking about and be prepared for direct questioning on the subject.
3. Localise your marketing
In order to really benefit from any opportunities that the economy offers, your marketing and messaging should be localized – that is, adapted to the demands and culture of the local market – in this case Germany.
When your content matches a customer’s cultural experience i. It helps your customers connect with your brand at a deeper level.
4. Culture is key
Understanding the German culture, learning the language and key phrases is key to showing respect. Following etiquette rules and traditions will go a long way to establishing a long term, trusted relationship.
5. Be present
Being seen in the country you want to do business in will go a long way to earning the respect of your potential client as well as others who may hear about you. If you cannot be in country all the time, have a local partner who can speak on your behalf. This should be someone who knows the culture and demands of the German economy.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Doing business in Germany is straight-forward and offers great opportunities and rewards. Remember, you are expanding for the long term so you need to build relationships and trust with the businesses and local partners. And always, say what you do and do what you say.
